On Monday, September 26, two volunteers from A Rotta Love Plus drove to Davenport, IA to complete the transport chain that would bring 5 survivors of Hurricane Katrina to the Twin Cites. The Rottweilers, now named Dora, Hugo, Caesar, Lenny, and Gilbert, arrived in Oakdale, MN at 10:00 pm to a room full of people whose only purpose was to love them.
A few days later they were joined by Andrew, Hazel, Bob, Katrina, Cleo, and Anita...6 weary Pit Bulls who had experienced a similar journey. We can only begin to imagine what horrors these dogs have faced over the last month and how disoriented and devastated they must feel. Their ailments range from bumps and bruises, to heartworm and hip dysplasia. The volunteers of A Rotta Love Plus are dedicated to bringing these dogs back from the brink...and if they can't find their owners they are determined to find them loving and forever homes. This page is for them. Over the next days, weeks, and months you can check back to see their pictures, read their stories, and learn about their progress and their future in the land of 10,000 lakes. Update 6.19.06 Only two more to go!!! Our darling Gilbert has found a wonderful and forever home!! Now if we could just find the right match for Andrew and Rita...while they certainly aren't the dogs for everyone, we can't imagine why SOMEONE hasnt' found room in their hearts and homes for these two... Andrew is just a clown...spunky and happy, he gets along with everyone and everything he meets. This boy's going to be an all-star frisbee dog with the right owner. Sweet Rita...she's come so far....while the scar on her back may never heal, we think her emotional wounds are just about gone....she's quickly becoming an obedience champ, and she's even started to learn that some dogs make great playmates If you think you'd be interested in bring a little Louisiana flavor into your home, check out one of these great dogs today!
Update 5.23.06 Happy Summer! Holy cow, it's been awhile since we've posted an update of our New Orleans transplants. And so much has happened!! The star of the show recently has been Gilbert and his foster family. When Gilbert first came to us he was extremely fearful and nervous, not to mention emaciated and heartworm positive. But with a lot of love and hard work on the part of his foster family Gilbert simply blossomed. Just last month he passed his CGC and two weeks ago, the agreements we're signed and he has now found his forever home! The cold winter also contained many a warm heart and Bobbie, Caesar, Cleo and Hazel have ALL found wonderful forever homes all over the state of Minnesota. Rita and Andrew are still looking for their perfect matches. So if you're interest in opening your hearts and homes to one of these survivors, contact us today.
Update 2.06.06 Whew...!!! It's been a busy months for these dogs....mostly great, but some sadness as well. On a happy note, two of them have found there forever homes here in the cold north. Hazel is now the center of attention for a wonderful family and has a couple of two-legged brothers who are bound to keep her hoping. She's completed her heartworm treatment and come through with flying colors. Little Bobbie has also found a forever family down in Henderson MN! She joins her JR Terrier brother Jack and several siblings of the two legged variety. They've got energy to spare and are keeping up with Bobbie just fine. Hugo, now Harry, has also completed his heartworm treatment and is well on his way to recovery. He just started his second level of obedience and his new family can't say enough wonderful things about this darling boy. On a sad note, Katrina has gone to the Rainbow Bridge. Her spunky spirit and silly antics will be remembered and truly missed.
Update 1.02.06 Happy New Year!! As we enter 2006, we are continually amazed to watch the progress of these Louisiana transplants. To date Lenny, Dora, and Hugo have been adopted. Andrew, Bobbie, Cleo, Caesar, Hazel, and Rita are still waiting for just the right family to come along and make their relocation complete! New pictures have been added to the Gallery, including some darn cute ones of the dogs with Santa! Take a look! Update - 12.05.05 These poor pups just don't know what to with all this cold white stuff! They're like Dogcicles! Sweater donations would be greatly appreciated I'm sure! The December 1st deadline has now come and gone, which means that ALL the dogs are now ready for us to find them new forever homes. We'd also like to send a huge THANK YOU to Petfinder and to Merial Pharmaceutical for generously donating both HeartGuard for the healthy dogs AND Heartworm treatment for the HW positive dogs. Not just for us, but for thousands of Katrina survivors. It's come to light that approximately 90% of all dogs coming out of Louisiana we're heartworm positive ...which is just so sad, since it's so preventable. PLEASE remember to keep your dogs on heartworm preventative. If you're interested in meeting some of these sweeties, be sure to check our Events page for "Meet and Greet" events that we hold at the Petsmart in Woodbury. We have one coming up on December 17th and 18th and several of them will be attending. That same weekend you'll be able to get a picture of your pup with Santa...so bring the whole family!
Update - 11.15.05 As the first snow fall of the season drifts down we can't help but wonder what these Cajun canines think about the white stuff...we can't wait to see how they react catching their first snowball! Sweet girl Cleo now has a foster home and is enjoying the comforts of the couch and playing with her foster sister! We discovered that Dora had already been spayed...that's saying something with this group as about 95% of the animals recovered from Louisiana were not. It's pretty clear that at some point she was a well loved member of the family...we hope that someday her owner might be able to know that she survived and is loved and cared for.
Update - 11.05.05 All the dogs are doing great! All the Rotties and Bob are now in foster homes, with the remaining dogs continuing to reside at Silver Lake Kennel. Our wonderful volunteers have been a dedicated bunch ...coming in everyday to ensure that they all get the love, attention, and exercise that they need. It's been amazing to watch them go from scared, starved, and sick, to healthy, active, and energetic dogs. They all seem to bark with a bit of a drawl, but we've been working on teaching them to say "Uf Da"....they refuse to transfer they're devotion to the Saints to the Vikings...but hey, I guess we can't blame them.. Health issues have ranged from entropian, coccidia, and bronchitis to 7 cases of heartworm, happy tail, and just plain exhaustion. Everyone is making progress but we still need help with funds. Their adoption donations will simply not cover their costs. If you can help in any way please scroll down to make a donation. Thank you!!
Meet the DogsRita
Updated 5.23.06 Rita has become a favorite of many of the volunteers here at A Rotta Love Plus. Her sweet and loving demeanor has won over many a heart. She's still looking for her forever home, but in the meantime is working on become the best mannered girl she can possibly be under the loving tutalidge of her foster momma. We think we see another CGC all-star down the road. You can see additional pictures of Rita by viewing her Photo Album. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Update 12.05.05 Rita is now in a foster home and is getting better everyday! She's a mellow girl who loves to follow her foster mommy around the house and sit quietly at her feet while she's cooking dinner. She is starting her heartworm treatment tomorrow and assuming all goes well will be available for adoption shortly. Rita is a wonderful girl...soft spoken and gentle, she can be picky about her canine companions but seems to love every person she meets. She came to us with a terrible scar running the length of her spine that our vet believes may have been caused by a power line. She is also heartworm positive. If you are interested in adopting Rita, please view our Placement Process page and fill out an application. Andrew
This boy is just one happy clown. He simply loves everyone and everything. He still looking for his forever family and would love someone who shares his love of frisbee, fetch, and jogging. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Andrew is a happy and exuberant boy. Loaded with energy and a zest for life, Andrew is adjusting quite well to his new life here in Minnesota. Andrew is now ready to start his search for a new forever home. If you're interested in adopting Andrew please visit our Placement Process page and fill out an application. Bob (Bobbie)
Updated 5.23.06 Bobbie now resides with a wonderful family in Henderson MN and has three two-footed brothers and sisters and another JRT. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bob actually surprised us twice the day we took him in....we were expecting a male pit bull and what we found instead was a female Jack Russell/Beagle mix! But "Bobbie" won our hearts over just the same....she is happy, energetic, loving little girl who loves every dog and person she's ever come across. Bob is now ready and raring to find a place to call her own. If you're interested in adopting Bobbie please visit our Placement Process page and fill out an application. Caesar
Updated 5.23.06 Caesar has found his new forever home with the Browne family in Southern MN. He shares 20 acres with three cats and couldn't be more delighted. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Caesar is just a big, lovable, goofy boy. His temperament is excellent and he gets along with everyone he meets. While he was quite thin when he came to us, in the loving care of his foster family he has turned the corner and is a healthy happy dog. Caesar is now healthy and happy and ready for a new forever home. If you are interested in adopting Caesar, please view our Placement Process page and fill out an application. Cleo
Updated 5.23.06 Cleo has decided to make the Twin Cities her permanent home. She now lives in the suburbs with her new family and couldn't be happier about becoming a Minnesota resident. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cleo was another delightful surprise....she a wonderfully sweet and energetic girl, and while we can see a bit of pit bull in her, she primarily resembles a German Shorthaired Pointer...which you would have been able to tell if she would have held still for her picture... Cleo is excited about finding her new home. Joggers and athletes encouraged to apply! If you're interested in adopting Cleo please visit our Placement Process page and fill out an application. Dora
Updated 12.05.05 Another new name, but one that will now last her forever..."Kimmy" has found a new and loving family with the Stofell's in Isanti. There she joins several other four-legged family members including another rescued Rottie and a couple of cats....and while still a bit unsure of the snow, she's definitely sure that she loves her new family almost as much as they love her. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dora, or as her foster family calls her, Xena (for her long legs and strong personality) is a regal and classy female. On arrival she was quite timid and fearful. But with a little love and attention she is turning out to be a wonderful girl who's simply looking for a place to call her own. Gilbert
Updated 5.23.06 Gilbert took his CGC test a couple of weeks ago, and passed with flying colors and has also found his forever home here in Minneapolis. Gilbert is a true Cinderella story...thank you to Paul, Tawnya, and Tiffany of Dogue Style dog training for helping turn this boy into the All Star we knew he could be. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Updated 1.02.06 With the loving and devoted attention of his foster parents, Paul and Tanya, Gilbert is a new dog! His love and trust for people has increased by leaps and bounds. He has become quite the lap dog of leisure. His health is great, he has put on some much needed weight, and is now ready to begin is heartworm treatments. If the last two months are any indication, he'll come though that with flying colors as well. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Physically and mentally, Gilbert is one of our most wounded warriors....extremely emaciated, and suffering from entropian and heartworm his physical rehabilitation is going to take awhile Mentally, we feel that Gilbert may have been abused in his previous life. He tends to be fearful of new people and put on quite the barking spectacle when he meets them. Men in particular. It's just a ruse...once he learns that he can trust you, he's a big cuddle bug who loves nothing more than to be petted and loved up by the ladies who have come to love this big boy. Gilbert should go to a breed experienced home that can care for him through his treatments and to help him work on his trust issues. This boy is a diamond in the rough, and will be a treasure for the person willing to "buff him up" a little. If you are interested in adopting Gilbert, please view our Placement Process page and fill out an application. Hazel
Updated 5.23.06 Hazel decided that life in the suburbs would suit her fine. She has been adopted by a wonderful family with two young boys who think she's the neatest thing ever. And we can't help but agree with them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Updated - 11.05.05 Hazel has come so far! She's nearly healthy (with the exception of the heartworm) and now has the softest head I've ever felt! This is girl is quickly become a favorite of all the volunteers. She amazingly sweet and loving...but stuffies should run in fear....as she loves nothing more than settling in finding out what's in the stuffie center... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Hazel came to us in terrible shape...a respiratory infection, heartworm positive, and an itchy, flaky, skin condition. In spite of all of this, she is sweet and kind and simply wants to be loved. Shown the slightest bit of affection she will melt into you and sigh with delight. Hugo
Updated - 11.04.05 Hugo has been adopted!! Now the much loved four-legged son of Rebecca and Brandon, and brother to Rottie sister Cider, and kitty friend Ranger, it's clear that Hugo is now going to be one spoiled dog. Congratulations to the new family! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hugo is a love bug! Currently being fostered by no less than 4 foster mommies and a 4-legged puppy foster sister, Hugo is winning the hearts of everyone he meets. Gentle and kind, he sometimes doesn't' realize how big he is and will just bowl you over. Sadly, like many of the dogs, Hugo is heartworm positive and will need to begin treatment shortly. Katrina
Updated - 2.05.06 Sweet and Sassy Katrina has gone on to the Rainbow Bridge. Her enthusiasm, energy, and silly antics will be missed by all. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Katrina is quite a sassy young lady....she doesn't care for other dogs, but thinks people, especially those with treats, are the neatest thing she's ever seen. Katrina is heartworm positive and will begin treatment soon Katrina will be staying in foster care for a bit longer as we work on improving her manners and her socialability. Stay tuned for more information Lenny
Poor Lenny was simply terrified when he arrived on our doorstep...thankfully a wonderful foster family came forward and showed him what "Minnesota Nice" is all about. Happily his foster family has failed "Fostering 101" and decided to make Lenny a permanent member of the family. Congratulations to Lenny, Margaret, Leroy, and his new 4-legged sister Trinity... Sponsor a SurvivorAs you can see, many of these dogs need extensive medical care. Heartworm treatment alone runs about $300 per dog. And that's not including spaying, neutering, and other treatments that these dogs will need. If you'd like to sponsor one of these new arrivals, or make a donation large or small, PLEASE contact us or click the button below to donate now using our secure PayPal account.... THANK YOUWe want to send a big thank you to all of you who have helped out in this effort so far.
