Daphne

~ Daphne ~

Daphne is roughly 2 years old and came to ARLP as the result of a seizure. Her owners were arrested as the result of an executed search warrant. Four pit bulls were seized. Ultimately 3 were euthanized. A very pregnant Daphne was spared and subsequently gave birth to six beautiful puppies on new years day 2008.

Fast forwarding to post puppy weaning and Daphne is currently living with me, her foster mamma, a 9 year old female American Staffordshire Terrier “Debbie”, a cranky 12 year old Greyhound/ Pointer mix “Ike” and a 2 year old puppy mill survivor Chihuahua “Chi”. They are rescues too. Together they are a motley crew. And boy do I love them. Daphne is a delight. It is impossible not to love her. Her enthusiasm for life is contagious. (Too bad a little of it doesn’t rub off on the old man dog) Especially since Daphne LOVES LOVES LOVES her doggy friends! Her best friend of late is Madeline my SO’s 2 year old pbully. And last night she met Bug (who once was my foster but now has his own fabulous home). She and Bug hit it off like gangbusters.

I call Daphne “punk rock” coz she is funky. Sporting a somewhat heartwarming home crop job on the ears, missing two little front teeth and trotting along on some of the most fingery dog feet I have ever seen, she is a sight that brings infectious smiles. Daphne enters a room like, “I am here! Let’s get this party started!”. Until you break out the camera. Then this little girl gets a little self-conscious. I tell her she is beautiful but she thinks I am crazy. So I follow and she gets a little anxious. When I play back the video footage the only thing that is apparent is her foster mamma be crazy! If you are a dog lover you know what I mean. The weirdest things pop out of our mouths and in the strangest voices. Oh my. But that’s what Daphne brings out of me. Sheer joy. She is going to be hard to part with.

Oh, and she is what I call a mammahog. She hogs the mamma. One thing about a rescue dog is that they are sponges for love. Every touch you offer is like a gift for which they are eternally grateful. I will gladly replenish Daphne’s love reservoir. And, in my humble opinion, to love a pit bull is its own gift.
