Training & Behavior

The Rottweiler is a WORKING dog. American Pit Bull Terriers and other bully breeds are just that...'tenacious terriers'. They need a job! Obedience training is a must with these breeds; both in the home and in an obedience class! Training your Rottweiler or pit bull type at home isn't enough. They need to learn how to listen to you and respond to distractions and thing that occur outside the home. Without proper training and socialization your new dog will make his own rules. These breeds have already suffered enough bad press due to negligent and irresponsible people. It's our job as a responsible rescue and your job as a breed!

When you get your new dog home, chances are he/she will not just settle right in. There are going to be issues you need to be prepared to deal with. It is your responsibility to work with a qualified trainer to get your dog on the right track. Your dog will not be ready for an obedience class as soon as they come into your home. Give them a chance to adjust to their new surroundings. Obedience classes can wait a few weeks. Until then you must develop a set of rules your dog will live by and be CONSISTENT, PATIENT & FAIR.

By participating in basic obedience your dog will be a pleasant companion and social with other dogs and people. Most importantly, it proves to the general public that they ARE loyal and friendly companions. Part of owning breeds such as the Rottweiler or a pit bull type is that you will need to be aware of the stigma that goes along with it.

Unfortunately, there are dog training schools out there are not the right place to train with your new dog. Beware of the training schools that have special ‘testing’ that only certain breeds must undergo. This shows that the school and/or trainers already has the mindset that the Rottweiler is a ‘bad breed’.

There are several types of training. Pain and compulsion training is OUT! Go with the newer and better way to train your Rottweiler or ABPT. Positive reinforcement/correction is the way to go. You will enjoy it more and so will your dog. This includes food reward, praise and many people are using ‘clicker’ training. Personally, I believe that there is NO better way to a Rottweiler’s heart than FOOD! (Mine think hotdogs, liver, and cheese are the best!) Pit bulls love food too but a meaningful 'good boy' is just as special to them. Add that WITH hot dogs and you're sure to have one eager to please Pittie!

And remember there are a lot of fun dog sports out there! Check out agility, flyball, tracking, carting, weight pulling, and herding. Obedience is a fundamental before beginning any of these sports.
