What is RescueRescue is when we save a good dog from being euthanized unnecessarily. Just because its owners didn't want it, or it doesn't have the best manners is not a reason to destroy a dog. We get calls from local animal control and other humane animal organizations if they impound a Rottweiler or Pit Bull. Many organizations realize it takes a special owner to train and responsibly own one of these dogs and cannot take the time to conduct the necessary screening. Once we get the call we need to determine if we have the space/available foster home to accept the dog. Once that is determined, we go evaluate the dog. The most important thing we look for is any people aggression. For safey reasons and liability, A Rotta Love Plus does not take in people aggressive dogs. Sadly, they have to be euthanized. Our initial temperament testing includes several steps and continues into the dogs' first 2 weeks in the program. Basically, what we look for is a dog that is eager to please, happy, and outgoing. We will work with fearful and abused dogs if we have an open foster homes that is capable of dealing with those types of issues. What we have found is that these breeds are very resilient and once treated with kindness and respect they will do anything for the people they love! The majority of the rescue dogs do not have a known medical or behavior history. They are often found as strays or the owners who abandon them at the shelter do not provide much useful information to help us determine what the dog is like. Fortunately, the dogs we have worked with over the past 5 years have developed into happy family members. The dogs are not deemed adoptable until their foster home has had the dog for a minimum of two weeks. During that time the dog is fully evaluated and any behavioral and/or training issues can be addressed.
