Our Placement Process

Charlie - PlacementWe are so glad that you are considering giving one of our dogs a chance at a brand new life with you!  At A Rotta Love Plus we have been working hard since 1997 to make sure our placements are a good fit for both the dog and their new human family member(s).  It can take time to do the groundwork that will ensure that an adoption is going to be a good fit, but we know you’ll find it worthwhile in the end.   This page will walk you through our process, and if you have any questions afterwards, don’t hesitate to contact us.  For us, the steps in this process are extra thorough in order to make certain that our dogs and their new humans have the best possible shot at long-term happiness together.  We’re not looking for our dogs’ next homes; we’re looking for their last homes!

What Can You Expect from A Rotta Love Plus?Mya Placement

  • That there will be an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and professional team to help you select a dog that will be a good fit for you, your family, and your home.
  • That ARLP will be available to support you before, during, and after the adoption.
  • That ARLP will not do same-day adoptions and will not adopt out our dogs on a first-come, first-serve basis (if we receive multiple applications on a particular dog we will place the dog in the home that is the best fit for that dog).
  • That ARLP will always have the best interests of our dogs at heart.

What Will A Rotta Love Plus Expect From You?

  • That you understand that it is in both your and the dog’s best interests that we all take our time in selecting a good match for you.
  • That you have carefully considered the decision to bring a dog in to your home and your life.
  • That you have taken the time to research the breed you are interested in to determine whether they are a good fit for your family and lifestyle.
  • That you will always have the best interests of our dogs at heart.

While we know that this process can seem daunting, we know that you’re willing to go through this trouble because you understand how it contributes to the long-term happiness of our dogs – we love each and every one, and not only want them to be happy, loved, and well-cared for in their new home, but also wish for the new family to be comfortable and pleased with their new family member.    We truly look forward to partnering with you to help you find your perfect match!

Step One - Review our Available Dogs

Bug PlacementTake a look at the dogs that are currently have available for adoption. A dog's description will answer most questions such as if the dog is good with cats, other dogs, or children.  One of the wonderful things about adopting from A Rotta Love is that the dogs are fostered in loving homes prior to adoption (as opposed to a centralized shelter facility) – this gives us the chance to evaluate their personality and behavior in a realistic environment.  So if you have any questions about a particular dog, feel free to ask!  If you do not see a dog that fits what you are looking for, keep checking back because there are always new dogs coming into the program.

Step Two - Fill out an application

Our application is a great tool to help you consider what you can and cannot deal with and whether our breeds are a good fit for you and your family.  Before you get started, here are a few reasons why your application could be declined:

  • Your homeowner’s insurance does not cover the breed.  Several major insurance companies will deny or cancel your homeowner’s insurance policy if you own a pit bull or Rottweiler.  (Hard to believe, isn’t it!)  Luckily for all of us, not all insurers feel this way.  In fact, the nation’s largest insurer, State Farm, is nondiscriminatory.  If you choose to adopt from us, ARLP will work with you to help you find a breed-inclusive insurer.  (p.s.  Even if you choose not to adopt one of these breeds, we hope you’ll consider giving your business to an insurance company that does not discriminate against dogs based solely on their breed!  For more information about homeowners insurance and breed bias, please visit the AVMA website.)
  • This dog will be adopted as a surprise and/or gift.  We require that all family members meet the dog prior to adoption.  Besides, part of the fun is getting to pick it out together!
  • The dog will be an “outside” dog.  A Rotta Love Plus dogs are just like any other family member – they deserve a place right inside your home!

Sound good?  Great!  Here’s our online application.

Step Three - Phone Interview

Hugo PlacementOnce we’ve screened your application for the key ingredients listed above, an A Rotta Love Plus case manager will further review your application and will e-mail or call you to follow up.  We’re going to be excited to learn more about you, so at this point we schedule and conduct a telephone interview where we go over your application with you and answer any questions you might have about the dog(s) you are interested in or about the breed in general.  If all goes well, we’ll take one last look at your application to verify the key information and call your references.

Step Four - Meet and Greets

Once you have been approved, a case manager will contact you to set up an initial meeting with the dog(s) that you’re interested in and that will be a good match for you.  The first meeting will be for all people in the family so you can interact with the dog.  You’ll leave your existing dog (if any) at home for this one – we want you to spend some one-on-one time with the dog.  The second meeting will be an introduction for any resident dog(s) and the potential adopted dog.  The rescue dog will need to meet all of your family, human and otherwise.  In some cases, additional visits may be required prior to an adoption.

Step Five - The Final Adoption

Emmy PlacementIf everyone agrees that the dog is a good fit for your family, we will ask you to complete an Adoption Agreement. Agreeing to these items is an essential part of the application process!  Our adoption fee of $350 is due when you sign the agreement (the money helps ARLP defray the costs of vet care, supplies, etc. prior to the dog’s adoption).

Step Six – Enjoy Your New Family Member!

Congratulations on your new addition!  We LOVE to receive photos and hear updates about how fabulous your new dog’s life has become, all thanks to your willingness to open your heart and your home to an ARLP dog.
